District 3-1 Cobb-Douglas
This fellowship position is in District 3-1 Cobb-Douglas in Marietta, Georgia. The fellow selected for this position will be an employee of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health for the duration of the fellowship but will spend their time working as a level 1 epidemiologist within the North Central district. The Fellow may be able to work remotely for 2-3 days per week.
The Fellow can expect to engage in a variety of routine epidemiologic activities in this position including:
- Participating in local partner meetings with the Epidemiology Director and team, including but not limited to: Region N Healthcare Coalition, GPHA Epidemiology Section, BioWatch Health Security, and other meetings as available.
- Cross-training in all Acute Disease Epidemiology programs
- Designs, implements, and maintains disease surveillance programs and/or best practices
In addition to regular duties, the Fellow will need to complete an oral/poster presentation and at least two required analytic, evaluation, or quality improvement projects. Examples of projects in this district include:
- Informatics and Visualizations: The fellow will support the Epidemiology Center team in new informatics and data visualization initiatives, including syndromic surveillance analysis and disease trend visualization. The district plans to utilize Power BI and the fellow will be expected to learn this program to produce reports and dashboards for leadership. This project addresses “Data Analytics and Assessment”, “Health Equity”, and “Communication” competencies.
- Assist the Health Equity Director with the following projects:
- The fellow will assist in the development of the Community Health Assessment (CHA) as a part of the agency’s 2027 Community Health Assessment (CHA)/Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), including data collection (using DPH OASIS), data analyses, and potential report writing. The CHA is conducted every five years and provides qualitative and quantitative data on the health status, quality of life, and risk factors for residents in Cobb County and Douglas County. The CHA includes data analyzed by population subgroups such as age, race/ethnicity, gender, and geographic region to identify health disparities and health inequities. Further, trends over time are assessed and compared to state and national averages. This project addresses the competencies “Data Analytics and Assessment” and “Community Partnership”.
- The fellow will assist with the management of the public-facing MySideWalk infectious disease webpage and ensure the data is current (evaluated 2 times/year). This webpage provides the public with access to the agency’s Community Health Assessment (CHA) data and updates on Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) strategies/action items. This project addresses the “Data Analytics and Assessment” and “Communication” competencies.
