District 1-2 North Georgia
This fellowship position is in District 1-2 North Georgia in Dalton, Georgia. The fellow selected for this position will be an employee of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health for the duration of the fellowship but will spend their time working as a level 1 epidemiologist within the North Georgia district. The Fellow should expect to work in-person, although a hybrid work schedule may become available to the fellow based on performance.
The Fellow can expect to engage in a variety of routine epidemiologic activities in this position including:
- Participate in community events at local accountability courts and substance abuse treatment centers to provide education and engage community members on these prevention topics.
- Cross-train for all notifiable diseases including STD, hepatitis, vector borne, food and waterborne illness.
- Collaborate in the development of community resources, including informational flyers and infographics, and support the creation of educational presentations for community partners and district residents.
In addition to regular duties, the Fellow will need to complete an oral/poster presentation and at least two required analytic, evaluation, or quality improvement projects. Examples of projects in this district include:
- Board of Health Reports: The fellow will develop quarterly reports for County Board of Health meetings that provide stakeholders with clear and timely insights into current infectious disease trends and other relevant public health data. This project could include both quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The end goal of this project would be to both equip the boards of health with a complete understanding of the state of infectious diseases as well as to understand actionable courses to reduce incidence and outbreak spikes. This project intentionally builds and demonstrates core competencies in data analytics, communication, community partnership, and leadership through the synthesis and presentation of actionable public health information. We also see an opportunity for the fellow to enhance the existing framework for outbreak and cluster reporting for diseases such as STIs and enteric infections to strengthen disease surveillance, promote health equity, and support timely public health response.
- Surveillance Analysis: The current surveillance system is at risk of missing true outbreaks that occur over long periods but not rapidly enough to be flagged by surveillance programs. The fellow will conduct quarterly analyses of surveillance data and develop reports that illustrate the situation, inform prevention strategies, guide targeted interventions, and support data-driven policy and decision-making. This project advances core public health competencies in public health science, health equity, policy development, communication, and data analytics.
Preferred Fellow background and skills include:
- Candidates with experience or interest in the following would be considered an excellent fit for the opportunities at District 1-2: ESRI tools such as ArcMap or ArcGIS, SAS and Power BI
