District 8-2 Southwest

This fellowship position is in District 8-2 Southwest in Albany, Georgia. The fellow selected for this position will be an employee of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health for the duration of the fellowship but will spend their time working as a level 1 epidemiologist within the Southwest district. Fellows may be able to work remotely 1 day per week.

The Fellow can expect to engage in a variety of routine epidemiologic activities in this position including:

  • Case investigation and outbreak monitoring for acute epidemiology department with a heavy focus on enteric diseases.
  • Participate in activities, projects, and investigations that involve interaction with public health staff and community partners. This includes supporting health fairs, community outreach events, STI screenings, and educational initiatives, as well as assisting with data tracking and program monitoring.
  • Cross-training with STD to assist with non-clinical syphilis testing done

    through community partners.

In addition to regular duties, the Fellow will need to complete an oral/poster presentation and at least two required analytic, evaluation, or quality improvement projects. Examples of projects in this district include:

  • Health Education and Outreach for Migrant Farmworker Clinics: The fellow would develop and implement culturally and linguistically appropriate health education for migrant farmworkers, with a focus on Spanish-speaking patients. Activities could include creating educational materials, leading small group sessions, and providing one-on-one counseling on preventive care and communicable disease prevention. Competencies addressed include Cultural Competency, Communication, Community Engagement, and Health Education Program Planning.
  • Syphilis Screening, Education, and Data Monitoring: The fellow can expect to support community-based syphilis screening initiatives by collaborating with partners to track events, monitor test results, and analyze trends to identify gaps in coverage. They would also assist in developing educational resources and strategies aimed at high-risk populations to increase awareness and testing uptake. Competencies addressed include Epidemiologic Analysis, Program Evaluation, Health Communication, and Public Health Surveillance.

Preferred Fellow background and skills include:

  • While not a requirement, it would be beneficial for the district if the fellow was Spanish-speaking.
