District 9-1 Coastal
This fellowship position is in District 9-1 Coastal in Savannah, Georgia. The fellow selected for this position will be an employee of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health for the duration of the fellowship, but will spend their time working as a level 1 epidemiologist within the Coastal district. The Fellow should expect to work in-person, although a hybrid work schedule may become available to the fellow based on performance.
The Fellow can expect to engage in a variety of routine epidemiologic activities in this position including:
- Fellows in our program would be exposed to a broad range of infectious disease epidemiology responsibilities, including routine surveillance, case investigations, outbreak response, analytic reporting, and community health assessment activities.
- Cross-train in many infectious disease and reportable condition areas, rather than being limited to a single disease program. This includes experience with enteric and foodborne illnesses, respiratory and vaccine-preventable diseases, healthcare-associated and emerging pathogens, sexually transmitted infections (HIV/STD), tuberculosis, zoonotic exposures (e.g., animal bites), and other reportable communicable diseases.
- Structured rotation and mentorship with epidemiology staff across program areas, participation in investigation and response activities as cases arise, and progressive involvement in analytic and quality improvement efforts that support the full scope ofinfectious disease epidemiology functions within the district.
In addition to regular duties, the Fellow will need to complete an oral/poster presentation and at least two required analytic, evaluation, or quality improvement projects. Examples of projects in this district include:
- Vaccine-Preventable Disease Surveillance & Outbreak: Response Improvement Project: The fellow would support enhanced surveillance and response planning for vaccine-preventable diseases, using measles as a current priority example. This project would involve analyzing case and contact investigation data, improving reporting workflows, and assisting with the development of provider-facing and community education tools to strengthen recognition, isolation, and timely notification practices. - Emerging Pathogen Readiness and Healthcare Partnership Evaluation Initiative: The fellow would contribute to preparedness and evaluation activities related to emerging infectious threats, including Candida auris readiness efforts. Responsibilities may include supporting data collection, assessing infection control capacity among healthcare partners, and developing targeted educational materials for staff and facilities. Competencies addressed: Policy Development & Program Planning, Communication, Community Partnership, Public Health Sciences, Health Equity.
Preferred Fellow background and skills include:
- Strong interest in applied infectious disease epidemiology and public health practiceat the local level
- Strong analytic skills are highly desirable, including familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools such as Excel, SAS, R, SPSS, or similar platforms, as well as comfort working with surveillance systems and managing public health datasets.
- Interest in quality improvement and performance management, adaptability to a fast-paced public health environment, and a strong commitment to health equity and serving diverse communities
- Spanish fluency skills preferred but not required
