District 2 North

This fellowship position is in District 2 North in Gainesville, Georgia. The fellow selected for this position will be an employee of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health for the duration of the fellowship but will spend their time working as a level 1 epidemiologist within the Southwest district. The Fellow should expect to report fully in person, but may be able to work remotely for 2 days per week.

The Fellow can expect to engage in a variety of routine epidemiologic activities in this position including:

  • Investigating notifiable diseases (e.g. enteric diseases, food-borne illnesses, animal bites, HIV/STDs/TB, etc.) and outbreaks of diseases that are not reportable (e.g. Flu, Norovirus, RSVP, etc.)
  • Cross-training as well as interaction and collaboration with other departments in the district (Nursing, Women’s health, Immunization, STI, Emergency Preparedness, Environmental Health, Chronic disease, etc.)

In addition to regular duties, the Fellow will need to complete an oral/poster presentation and at least two required analytic, evaluation, or quality improvement projects. Examples of projects in this district include:

  • Community Partnership: The fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate with other disease investigation staff and infection preventionists at hospitals, clinics and labs in an effort to improve awareness and educate health partners on required timelines for disease reporting, and onboard health partners to SendSS (notifiable disease system) to reduce reporting delays and improve accuracy of reported cases. Routine in-service sessions will be conducted for health partners in all 13 counties within District 2 (may be virtual or in-person), and the updated/current notifiable disease list, which outlines specific reporting times, will be distributed. The fellow can expect to work with the Epidemiology team in guiding healthcare partners through the reporting process in SendSS to minimize reporting errors.
  • Data Analytics and Assessment: D2 EPI recently launched it’s district specific disease dashboard that covers disease prevalence and status in district 2 public health. The fellow will collaborate with other EPI staff, health partners/ stakeholders, district staff to obtain data on specific notifiable diseases and use (or be trained if needed) statistical tools/platforms to analyze the data in a medium that is appropriate for district leadership, health partners, board of health members and residents in an effort to increase stakeholders awareness of public health problems which may in turn guide future strategies to eliminate the problem.
