District 1-2 North Georgia

This fellowship position is in District 1-2 North Georgia in Dalton, Georgia. The fellow selected for this position will be an employee of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health for the duration of the fellowship but will spend their time working as a level 1 epidemiologist within the North Georgia district. The Fellow should expect to work completely in-person.
The Fellow can expect to engage in a variety of routine epidemiologic activities in this position including:
- Assists in the implementation of timely disease intervention strategies to decrease the prevalence of communicable diseases.
- Designs, implements, and maintains disease surveillance programs and/or best practices.
- Collects, analyzes, and interprets statistical data and prepares reports.
- Conducts engagement and outreach with community members and/or stakeholders.
In addition to regular duties, the Fellow will need to complete an oral/poster presentation and at least two required analytic, evaluation, or quality improvement projects. Examples of projects in this district include:
- Health disparities profile for health district. The final deliverable is a formal report summarizing findings with actionable recommendations on how to reduce health disparities in the district. This project would include quantitative data collection and analysis regarding many notifiable health conditions in the district, patient demographics, and EMR reviews. Additionally, the fellow would conduct qualitative data collection and analysis from private health care providers and community centers. This data and guidance will be presented to the local boards of health across the district.
- Assessment of resource allocation priorities from the pre-pandemic era to the present. The goal of this project is to identify where shifts in public health clinic priorities and resources are appropriate based on infection trends. The fellow will assess quantitative health department data to identify trends in illness rates, patient needs, and clinic resources. The fellow would use qualitative data from health department staff to determine priorities and emerging trends. The fellow would present findings to district leadership and additional community decision makers.
Preferred Fellow background and skills include:
- Closely supervised work experience demonstrating competence in conducting public health surveillance, analyzing surveillance data, reporting analytic results, and conducting outbreak investigations.
- Experience performing data analysis with Excel and SAS.
- Good written and verbal communication skills strongly preferred.
