Georgia Department of Public Health

This fellowship position is for the Georgia Department of Public Health in Atlanta, Georgia. The fellow selected for this position will be an employee of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health for the duration of the fellowship but will spend their time working as an early-career epidemiologist at GDPH. The Fellow should expect to work fully in person, but may be able to work remotely 2-3 days per week.

The Fellow can expect to engage in a variety of routine epidemiologic activities in this position including:

  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets statistical data and prepares reports on chronic diseases . 
  • Conducts engagement and outreach with community members and/or stakeholders affected by or interested in disease outbreaks or data 
  • Provides training, technical assistance, and consultative services regarding epidemiology and the control of diseases. 

In addition to regular duties, the Fellow will need to complete an oral/poster presentation and at least two required analytic, evaluation, or quality improvement projects. Examples of projects in this district include:

  • The fellow will assess the impact of budgetary changes on quality of care among stroke patients at designated stroke centers. The fellow will produce stroke data summary and a legislative report to be shared with Georgia DPH leadership, state legislators, and the community at large through the Georgia Stroke Professional Alliance (GASPA). Findings will be shared with colleagues in the epidemiology division and the Division of Epidemiology and Chronic Disease, Health Behaviors, and Injury Epidemiology (CHIE) section.   
  • The fellow will conduct an evaluation of the cancer registry surveillance system to further understand how to sustain achieving 90% completeness for 12-months year after year. The final deliverable for this project will be an evaluation report based on the findings to be shared with the program funder as part of the deliverables to CDC; present findings at the CHIE section as well as to the Georgia Cancer Control Consortium (GC3), a public-private organization that leads cancer control activities and supports intervention of Evidence-Based Intervention. The fellow is expected to present findings at the 2026 GATRA Annual meeting 

Preferred Fellow background and skills include:

  • Closely supervised work experience demonstrating competence in conducting public health surveillance, analyzing surveillance data, reporting analytic results, and conducting outbreak investigations. 
  • Strong data analysis and data presentation skills
